At least 16 people were injured when a crowded roof collapsed at a party near the University of Pittsburgh.
According to a press release From Pittsburgh Public Safety Department, just before 17:30 on Friday, March 14, the University of Pittsburgh Police, Pittsburgh Police, Fire and EMS responded on reports of a “Veranda collapse with injuries” at the 300 -quarter in Semple Street in Central Oakland.
Upon arrival, the responders located a “collapsed porch on the back of a home with a large audience gathered.”
Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said that witnesses reported that “several hundred” individuals had converged on the common farm behind the home. According to CBS affiliate KDKA TVAbout 300 to 500 people were in the yard below the collapse.
A video Retrieved from the party and shared on social media show several people on the roof of the porch and on the porch itself when it collapsed. A witness about the collapse, Nathan Pierzchala, told Pittsburgh after Gazette He counted up to 22 people on the roof when the incident occurred.
As a result of the collapse, Pittsburgh EMS transported a total of 16 individuals from the scene, according to the press release. Thirteen of the individuals were transported in “stable condition”, while three others were transported in “serious but stable condition.”
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety Department, “The majority of transport was for minor arm and leg injuries and concussions. An individual is believed to have suffered a bone fracture.” At least a dozen people were treated in place for minor injuries.
The press release said that the department for permits, licenses and inspections (PLI) arrived at the site and “condemned the porch but considered that the housing structure itself was sound.”
Michael Estocin, one of the individuals who was on the roof when it collapsed, told KDKA TV: “The whole thing happened only for a moment.”
“The roof just collapsed at us, it felt so scary, I really don’t have the words to understand how I felt at the moment,” he said.
University of Pittsburgh police confirmed in a Social media update that the injured were transported for care. It said it continues to work with the city on the investigation of what happened.

“As a reminder, it’s never safe to be on the roof,” added their statement. On one Follow -up item On Friday night, they said that roads in Oakland are open except for the 300 quarter in Semple Street “which is still closed at this time.”
