A 19-year-old man, who sought to be a national guardian, was killed by a suspected drunk driver this week in California.
Sacramento City Council member Lisa Kaplan identified the victim as Ricky Ray Reyes Jr., who had “been waiting for the bus” Wednesday 6 August.
“A precious young man lost his life just waiting for the bus. A family is destroyed and no one should have to experience this,” Kaplan wrote at X. “Please don’t drink and drive.”
Sacramento Police Department (SPD) said in a press release that officers responded to reports of the collision shortly after 15:15 in the Del Paso Road area and El Centro Road. Police said respondents found the male pedestrian “down the roadway.”
Although he tried life -saving measures, the police said that the man was pronounced dead on stage. They added, “The driver of the vehicle suffered damage and showed signs of intoxication. The driver has been arrested and remains at the hospital.”

The police did not identify the man who was arrested. The SPD said that detective from its large collision investigation unit (MCIU) and investigators of crime sites (CSI) responded to the stage “because of the circumstances.”
The police added that they “processed the scene, dropped the area and interviewed witnesses.”
The authorities ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the police at (916) 808-5471. They said all tips “may be eligible for a reward up to $ 1,000.”
Reye’s family described him in a GofundmeEstablished to raise money for his funeral, as a person who was “known for his honesty, kindness and the wholehearted way he took care of everyone around him.” They said he died eight days before his 20th birthday.

His loved ones added that he participated in “Jrotc through school” and dedicated some time on the weekends to visit the Army National Guard Base in Sacramento as he prepared “for a future in the military.” They said he also worked at Corti Brothers, where he created Deli sandwiches for his community.
“He was … always looking for ways to build a better life for himself and his family,” said his loved ones at Gofundme. “His loss has left a deep void in life to those who loved him, and his family is now facing the difficult task of arranging his funeral while handling their grief.”
