An American college student spent almost two weeks behind bars in Copenhagen, Denmark, according to what his family claims was an “unprovated attack” by an Uber driver.
Owen Ray, a 19-year-old student at Miami University in Ohio, was released from the Vestre prison on Monday, April 14, a spokesman for the family confirms in a statement shared with people. Ray and his friend, another US citizen, were arrested at Copenhagen Airport on April 1 after a ticket conflict with an Uber driver.
On March 31, Ray and his friend accidentally entered the wrong address during a Uber trip back to their hotel in Copenhagen, according to the family spokesman. After realizing that they put in the wrong address and could not change it, the couple asked to be taken to their correct hotel.
“The driver refused to take them to the alternative place, so Owen and his friend left Uber and they canceled the trip,” the family spokesman claims in the statement. “As usual, the canceled ticket price was paid through the app.”
The two friends were looking for another Uber to take them back to their hotel. “About five minutes later, the original Uber driver returned and began to threaten the boys because he thought he was not paid,” the family spokesman claims. “The boys assured him that he would be paid in the app.”

According to the family spokesman, the Uber driver came out of the vehicle and “continued to threaten the boys, who replied that he would call the police because they had not done anything wrong.”
It is when the family spokesman claims that the driver is alleged to attacked Owen. “A mixture followed and culminated with the boys escaping because of fear. Everything is captured via Uber’s Dash Cam video, which is now part of the judicial procedure in Denmark.”
The couple was “prepared to leave the country on their previously scheduled flights” at the time of their arrests the next day, says the family spokesman.
In response to the charges, an Uber talent tells people: “The security of anyone using the Uber app is a top priority, and we take reports of violence very seriously. The driver reported to Uber that he was attacked by two riders who were later arrested by Danish police. All further questions about the investigation should be addressed to the Danish police.”
According to ABC NewsA spokesman for Copenhagen’s police confirmed the arrests of two US citizens, who were charged with joint abuse. People have been enough for Copenhagen’s police for further comments about the two are in criminal charges.

“We are relieved that Owen has been released from a Danish prison after the unprovated attack that he and his friend suffered from the hands of an Uber driver on March 31,” said Andy Ray and Sara Buchen-Ray in a statement shared with people on April 14.
“But we remain deeply concerned that the Danish authorities have confiscated his passport and will not allow him to return to the United States – something we understand is unusual in Danish court procedures. The facts make it clear that Owen is victims in this case, and we urge Danish officials to let him return home to the United States without delay.”
