After a search overnight, two young brothers were found alive and well in a wooded area in central Mississippi.
On Saturday, August 2, the authorities received a report at about 20.00 local time that two boys, ages 8 and 10, were missing near Cato Circle in Pearl, a city with about 27,000 people just east of Jackson, the capital of the state. The residential area is surrounded by dense forest, head of the Pearl Police Department, Nick Mclendon, tells People.
Before their family reported that they were missing, the brothers played outside, in a ditch near the edge of the tree line.
“It was getting dark, and they thought they were going home, but they went deeper in the forest,” says McLendon. “The next thing they know, it is completely pitch black dark and they are lost in the forest.”
Not long after, the authorities had close to a hundred resources on the ground, from drones and K-9 to searching and saving teams. A command center was set up in nearby Jenkins Park, says the police chief. A coordinated search effort runs at 10pm
Emergency solutions began the search with drones in the air and the dogs who were looking for the tree -truly area. While the dogs eventually lost the scent, they had helped limit the search area, says McLendon.
“We had a pretty good area where they last located the scent and footprints in the creek,” he says. About 1:15 the next morning, the brothers were found by a heat -seeking drone about 1,000 meters into the wooded area. They were found lying, according to the authorities.
“They just got lost in the forest, were turned,” says McLendon. The boys told officials that when it got dark and they were still lost, they decided “to sleep there and wait for the sun to come up.”

They were transported to a local hospital, but were determined to be unharmed.
McLendon says their family was “ecstatic” that the children were found safe.
“They were happy to be reunited with their children,” he says.
While officials encourage children to play outside, they urge their parents to keep an eye on them.
“We would love them to leave the units and be children outside, but just monitor them,” says McLendon. “Especially when it starts to get dark, they must have a certain time to start coming home.”
