9 people, including 3-year-old children, kidnapped from orphanages: Reports

Nine people, including a 3-year-old child, have been kidnapped from an orphanage in Haiti, according to reports.

On Sunday, August 3, the victims from Sainte Hélène Orphanage were taken in Kenskoff by “Armed Bandits”, Haitian Outlet Nouvellist Reported, with reference to KensCoff Mayor Jean Masillon and a source near the orphanage.

The facility — which is close to the Haitian capital of Port-AU-Prince-powered by the humanitarian organization Our little brothers and sistersthat translates to “our little brothers and sisters”, per Irish transmitter Rté.

Simon Harris, who currently serves as Ireland’s Tánaiste, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Defense Minister, said in a statement that the Irish citizen Gena Heraty and a 3-year-old child were among the kidnapped Per A News notice.

Rté reported that Heraty, which is in the mid-50s and comes from the city of Westport on the west coast of Ireland, monitors the orphanage.

Harris said: “The kidnapping of the Irish citizen Gena Heraty, along with seven of her colleagues and a three -year -old child from the ground up to an orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, is deeply worrying.”

“Gena has served the people of Haiti for over 30 years. She has spent her life supporting the most vulnerable people in Haiti and it is imperative that she be released immediately,” he added according to the publication.

“This morning I had a good conversation with Gena’s sister Noreen and I assured her that everything is done to ensure Gena’s release,” Harris continued in the post, which was shared on Monday 4 August.

“My department is in close contact with the Heraty family, the local authorities and no Petits Frères et Sœurs, (the organization) Gena works for,” he continued, according to the publication.

“The country’s two ambassadors are also in close contact. We will continue to leave no stone (reverse) to ensure that Gena and her colleagues are released,” Harris concluded.

Masillon called the kidnapping a “planned action”, according to Irish independence.

“The attackers broke into the orphanage around 3:30 (local time) without opening fire,” Masillon said.

“They broke through a wall to get into the property before going to the building where the director lived and left with nine hostages,” continued the mayor.

Heraty has lived in Haiti since 1993 and operated the orphanage which can accommodate up to 270 children, according to the outlet.

Per Rté has been killed at least 3,141 people in Haiti during the first half of this year in the midst of growing concerns about gang violence, citing the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In recent months, gangs are alleged “launched attacks against past peaceful communities”, the Irish independence reported, with reference to the UN.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Humanitarian Organization No. Petits Frères et Soeurs did not answer immediately when contacted by people for further information.
