An amateur Russian pilot has died after trying to fly in a homemade helicopter, according to reports.
On Thursday, July 30, 88-year-old Vladimir Trapeznikov tried to start in the aircraft when the rotor blades unloaded, causing deadly main trauma to the pilot, CNN reported, with reference to Volga Region Transport’s Prosecutor’s Office (VRTPO).
“During the engine start, while they were still on the ground and when the engine power was built, the main rotor blades unloaded. This caused damage to the pilot,” VRTPO said in a statement to the outlet.
Trapeznikov was transported to Omutninsky District Hospital but died from his injuries hours later, per CNN. This was the fifth aircraft that the former timber truck driver had constructed. The vehicle was unregistered at that time.
The incident took place in the village of Zalazna, in the Kirov region, where Trapeznikov was from, according to local shops Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Film of the event obtained that is shared on social media reportedly shows that Trapeznikov is in the aircraft when the rotor blades spin before trying to lift. One of the leaves flies off when the aircraft is still on the ground and hits Trapeznikov in the head when the structure falls apart, per Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
Trapeznikov’s daughter and son -in -law was reportedly present at the time of the incident, a source allegedly Izvestia.
Trapeznikov received previous national fame in 1985 when he successfully flew a homemade plan. His craft made him get a function place in a short film in a Panoramic Cinema and TV Newsreel, CNN reported. According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the amateur pilot appointed its first aircraft Rosinante, after Rocinante, Don Quixote’s horse in Miguel de Cervante’s novel.

The 88-year-old always dreamed of becoming a pilot as one and later became a self-taught inventor, according to local stores. Per CNN he built a total of five aircraft during his lifetime, including the last, that failed.
The authorities investigate the circumstances of the incident.
