Bill Gates Famously dropped away from Harvard University during his junior year – But in his new memoirThe Source codeHe opens up to have problems with the school’s administrative board as another.
Gates studied for the spring final when he received a phone call from a school official who told him: “I want to meet you in my office tomorrow.”
The Milliar’s philanthropist writes that he immediately knew what the problem was: his computer use.
During the meeting, Gates learned that he logged 711 hours at the school’s Aiken Computation Laboratory, which was funded by the US Department of Defense.
An even bigger question? He had brought with him two “unauthorized people” ware one was future Microsoft founder Paul AllenWho was never a Harvard student – to the lab to work on a “commercial project” for computer use.
Eventually, Gates had to hand over his key to the computer center and learned that he was reported to the school’s administrative board.
It was only two days later that Gates realized exactly what was at stake.
As his senior teacher explained, according to Source code“In the worst case, the board shows that the couple expels me from Harvard, and if they thought my actions were particularly serious, they would eradicate my post.”
Before the prospect of potentially being kicked from college, Gates writes, he sent a letter to the administrative board, both of which were a “defense of my actions”, a “criticism” of the Datalaboratory – which did not have much surveillance at that time – and that The fact that he believed that microcators were the future.

After his father suggested that he “was more reconciled”, he continued to end his letter with more excuses.
A week later, Gates heard that the administrative board had made a decision on what to do.
“They voted to” admonish me “for incorrect and unauthorized use of the lab,” writes Gates, which meant he went without even a penalty.
When he spoke to people about his memoir, Gates was asked why it has taken so many years for him to share this story.

“I don’t know,” he says, noting that it didn’t stop being “such a big deal” – and that there is something that just comes up “if you will go into a lot of details.”
“I try not to distort things,” he insists and brought up his 1977 arrest to speed up Albuquerque, NM, as an example, which ended with Allen bailing him.
Gates says he has talked about getting “many tickets” and says he admittedly thinks he has raised what happened at Harvard during some school -related “historical” events.
In the end, he adds, “I had my ups and downs, and that one was more of a misunderstanding.”
