Former World No. 2 Petra Kvitova retires.
The professional Czech tennis player, 35, announced on Instagram on Thursday 18 June that she will retire from the game after 19 years.
“When I grew up in my hometown Fulnek and met the first tennis balls with my father at the local courts, I never imagined that I became a professional tennis player, being able to travel the world and play at the most beautiful stadiums around the world,” the twice the Wimbledon champion formed an instagram in the Venus who contains Venus who contains Venus who contains the Venus who contains Venus who contains Venus Venus Venus.
“And certainly enough … somehow all this became reality, and so much more,” Kvitová continued.
Throughout its almost two decades’ professional tennis career, Kvitová has won two Wimbledon championships, 2011 and 2014, and Sex Billie Jean King Cup trophy, which is the world’s largest annual international women’s team competition. Achieving this performance ranked Kvitová as No. 2 in the world.
“I have achieved more than I could ever have imagined and I am so grateful for everything that tennis has given me all these years,” Kvitová continued in the social media post.
The lessons that Kvitová has learned to reach far beyond the court or even the gym, she wrote.
“I would never be who I am today without this beautiful sport, and all it has given me both on and outside the court.”
Thus, at the end of the tennis season, Kvitová announced that she will no longer play professionally.
“I am excited and am very much looking forward to sucking in the beauty of playing the championship, Wimbledon again, a place that has the most cherished memories in my career for me,” Kvitová wrote about her last season.
Kvitová plans to end his career on a high tone by playing at the US Open in New York, as of August 24 – September 7.
“Although no such decision is ever easy to make, for me this is a happy moment! I will leave the sport with the biggest smile on my face – the same smile you have seen from me on and outside the court throughout my career,” wrote Kvitová.
Kvitová thanked her friends, family and coaches who have supported her throughout her tennis career.
“Tennis has given me everything I have today, and I will continue to be eternally grateful for this beautiful sport that I love,” concluded Kvitová.
