Billy Idol is reminiscent of overdose of almost deadly heroin 1984: ‘I basically die’

Billy Idol Opens up about drug abuse that almost cost him his life.

The Punk Rocker, 69, got an overdose almost deadly in London in 1984 while he ran the success of his second album Rebel screamshe reveals in his new documentary Billy Idol should be deadwhich premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 10.

At that time, Idol was in the late 20s and had found great success in the United States thanks to hits such as “Rebel Yell” and “Eyes without a face.” He says in the documentary that he decided to return to England as a kind of victory laps, “because I had done so.”

“I came back in Triumph and I almost ruined it,” he says. “We flew to London where we met a lot of our comrades we knew. They had some of the strongest heroin. Everyone made a line or so and they nodded out except me and this friend of me.”

When the rest of the group went out, Idol says he and his friend continued to do more of the heroin.

“I basically die. I turned blue,” he recalls. “So they put me in an icy bath and I remember they went on top of the building, on the roof.”

In the doctor, the Grammy-nominated singer explains the attraction of drugs during his hard party days and said it was something that the rock scene really “embraced” at that time.

“A number of people were on it. But you know, you are wide open for it. Many of the people we loved were all heroin dependent,” he says. “Lou Reed wrote the song ‘Heroin.’ You didn’t think how dangerous it was. In fact, you think the opposite. Maybe this can let go of something. ”

Elsewhere in the documentary, Idol reveals that he eventually gave up heroin for good after a wild trip to Bangkok where he and a friend took up an estimated $ 75,000 in damage to a hotel. The trip took place when his Son Willemwhich was born in 1988, was a child.
