13-year-old Ellireese Niday won women’s 10-meter diving events during a competition this week in Alabama and became one of the youngest national champions in the history of the sport.
Niday, from Moultrie, Georgia, finished with 721.40 points and best Texas Sophomore Bayleigh Cranford – which is six years older – with 10 points. She is the youngest who won a senior National Diving Championship in an individual event since 2016, when Hailey Hernandez-that continued to compete at the 2020 Tokyo-fast 3-meter title at the age of 13.
“It doesn’t really feel. I was just trying to stay focused on my own dives and celebrate,” Niday told Usadiving On Thursday, May 15th.
Niday, who turns 14 in February, is already turning its attention to a larger scene.
“It’s really crazy. Maybe a day when I grow up I make the Olympic team,” Niday said.
According to NBC SportsThe two best winners in each individual event at Nationals would usually qualify for World Cup that was set for this summer, but Niday is too young because she will not be 14 at the end of this year.
This is Niday’s best finish at an older championship event. The seven-time Junior National Champion finished in fifth place at Winter National Championships 2024 per USA diving. She has also won three gold medals at Junior Pan American Championships 2023.
