Bachelor Nation has found its next Golden bachelor: Mel Owens.
On April 22, ABC announced that the retired NFL player-turning team would step into the limelight to find love among Bachelor Nation’s next group of senior women. When host Jesse Palmer Owens asked how he felt to be the next Golden Bachelor during Disney’s Get Real event the next day, he replied, “Great.”
“It has been 24 hours of madness,” Owens added and explained that he found out that he had been given the role the day before.
The upcoming reality star hopes to be able to rediscover a love “rooted in the simple joy of friendship – share life’s everyday moments, plan for the future and grow stronger together as a couple,” Per ABCs press release.
So who is Golden Bachelor? Here’s everything to know about Mel Owens – including the kind of love he will look for in the mansion.

Owens was born and raised in a “closely composed Midwestern family” in Detroit, Per ABC. According to Southern Florida TribuneHe was born on December 7, 1958.
After being involved in athletics throughout his childhood, he continued to participate and play football at the University of Michigan.
According to ABC, he has since moved to Orange County, Calif.

After his degree from the University of Michigan, Owens was elected the ninth overall election in the NFL draft 1981 by Los Angeles Rams, with which he played as Linebacker until 1989.
During an interview in April 2024 with Southern Florida TribuneOwens reflected on his NFL career and shared that the highlight was prepared.
“Two Bookends. Everything in the middle is work,” he said. “But I played with many fantastic players, I had a fantastic time … We built the NFL where it is now. It was just before the TV contracts became big in the early 90’s.”
Owens eventually went back from football and switched to a career in the team, “devoted themselves to helping partly those who seek justice for sports-related injuries,” Per ABC.
Under his conversation with Southern Florida TribuneOwens explained that his sports -related legal work helps him continue to feel “linked to the game.”

Owens married for 25 years before he and his ex-wife-his “first love”, Per ABC-Skilled.
Although not much is known about their relationship, Owens shared at Disney’s Get Real Event that he lacks most about being married is “friendship”.
“I’m looking for it,” he said.
Owens has two sons, which he welcomed with his ex-wife. Per ABC, after his divorce and the death of his father’s, channeled Owens “his energy to be the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching his leisure sports teams.”
When Owens shared at Disney’s Get Real event, both his children plan to play baseball in college – and his younger son is to thank for landing the leading role in Bachelor Nation.
“We looked at the usual Bachelor previous. He goes, “Yes Dad, you should be a bachelor’s degree,” Owens reminded. “The ad came out for (The golden bachelor). He says, “But you should be the real one, however.” ”
Owens also shared his son’s special request: he wants to stand next to his father when the women “come out” to meet their potential match.
“I go,” maybe if I get it, maybe I will look it up for him, “Owens said.

The day after the announcement, Owen’s Palmer told us a little about what he is looking for in his partner and said he wants “someone who is honest, charming, loving, appropriate. Someone full of life because it’s time.”
According to the press release, Owen’s “eager to meet someone who shares (his) vision and finally finds the perfect teammate he has been waiting for during his golden years.”
