Dead Horse found on Atlanta Street: ‘Very unusual to see’



Some people in Atlanta witnessed an unfortunate sight on Sunday: a dead horse lying in a lively area.

“We are aware of the tragic occurrence that results in a deceased horse on Peachtree Street,” said Atlanta Police Department (APD) in a Post on X. Shared Sunday 6 April. “We are currently reviewing the cameras with the authorities including the Ministry of Agriculture.”

Officials asked people to avoid the area shortly after 11:30 on Sunday to allow crews such as “space and safety” needed to remove the deceased animal from the area.

“Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department are currently coordinating efforts to ensure the safe and respectful removal of the animal,” APD said in a statement.

They also noted that they “identified the horse’s owner” and that “the person cooperates” with the authorities. However, the police gave no more information about how the animal could have died and why it was in the area.

Transmitters originally warned to the dead horse on the streets of officers around 12:30, according to a scanner traffic recording obtained by WANF-TV. According to the scanner, another officer noted that there had been “several men” riding horses in the area overnight.

The horse’s owner reportedly told officers that the animal suffered a “possible medical emergency” before it collapsed on the sidewalk, per outlet. However, some people have thrown doubts about this, including long-term horse coaches and Cobb County Rescue Volunteer Laurie Wilson, who told WANF-TV that it was “very unusual to see any horse in central Atlanta, much less that situation.”

“It is not unlikely that it could happen,” she explained. “And I say it is unlikely that it can happen, but it is strange that it happened in central Atlanta, and then the horse is left and lies there without equipment.”

But she noted from videos that circulated by the horse on the street that the animal seemed fresh and had good shoes on. “I saw nothing out of neglect, the horse seemed very good care.”

APD has not yet shared an update of the event and if fees will be placed.
