Melinda Gate’s divorce from Bill Gates was secretly developed for one year (exclusive)

Melinda French gates Has a quick but considered response for almost everything during a new Sit-Down interview for this week’s edition of Humanity-and then it’s time to discuss her divorce from Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates.

Asked to respond to “storage” in her marriage, a word she uses in her new book The next day (Out April 15) – which chronicles some of the biggest life changes she met and what she taught from them – the philanthropist takes a long break.

Then she replies, “You must always stay believed in yourself, right?”

It is one of the many lessons she shares in The next dayA mixture of memoir and insight, although Melinda notes that she “does not try to advise anyone,”

The end of her marriage, as she and Bill jointly announced Almost four years ago, it remains painful to discuss. Still, as Melinda says to people, “It was important for me to be real.”

“Hopefully,” she adds, “it may be helpful to someone else.”

Although it had been “difficult periods” with Bill before, Melinda writes in her book that at the end of 2019 she had nightmares about a beautiful house that collapsed around her – and then woke up in a panic night after night. (Her subconscious was “a little obvious,” she writes.)

Melinda writes that her dreams eventually turned into a vision of her and Bill and their three children on the edge of a cliff when she “sank” in the void.

“As dramatic as it sounds,” she wrote. “I knew at that moment that I would have to make a decision – and that I would have to do it myself.”

She initially tried to drive away her worries, but when it didn’t work, she invited Bill to a trip in February 2020 to New Mexico, which she originally planned to spend alone.

When they arrived at their apartment building, Melinda had an insight: the property was available because the couple who lived there had shared.

Although Melinda and Bill tried to treat it “like all other holidays” last night, she told him she wanted to start living separately – and that she would stay their home With her youngest daughter, Phoebe, who was a senior in high school.

“It was one of the scariest conversations I had,” she writes, reminding that Bill was “sad and upset” but also “understanding and respectful.”

At home in Seattle, they continued to work together at their Global Gates Foundation – even making joint performances, which can be a bit difficult, especially because, with the exception of a few people, no one knew what was really going on.

Eventually, she decided it was time to go away.

That summer she told Bill that she wanted a divorce and they shared a long, even sometimes “sore” conversation.

Melinda still knew that the months would be tough. “Bill has a reputation for being one of the toughest negotiators in the world,” she writes, adding that she “began to panic attacks.”

She mentions other panic attacks in her book: 2006, when she believed their Son, RoryNow 25, was about to cross the edge of an air balloon; And again, around New Year’s Day 2014, while she celebrated her 20th anniversary with Bill in Mexico.

At lunch that day, the conversation turned to a “poisonous” person at work, writes Melinda. When Bill suggested that he gave him a “lavish” starting package, “she felt the walls closed.” (It also made her seek a new psychologist, and Melinda is still working on her ten years later.)

Ultimately Melinda – which describes in The next day How her inner voice had faded “during the decade or so before my marriage fell apart” – writes that therapy “enabled me to answer storage in my marriage without betraying myself in return.”

The process of completing their split was “incredible” and surprisingly long, she writes, but when the agreement was reached, things moved quickly.

They took the weekend to tell some people near their foundation, and the day after, May 3, 2021, they posted their joint statement.

As a scattering, Melinda was at home with Phoebe, then 18. At one point Phoebe even showed his mother a few memes about the news.

“We laughed a little, but I wasn’t really in a festive mood,” Melinda writes.

When it comes to what, exactly, her decision to leave, her answer has remained the same: it is for Bill, alone, to tell the world.

“It takes courage that creates another life,” Melinda tells People of Her Next Chapter, including giving billions through important investments. “When you change your way, you realize, oh, it’s a big opening.”
