From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground as the story develops. Whether it is investigating the economy of Elon Musk’s Pro-Trump PAC or produces our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines on the American women who fight for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to analyze facts from messages.
In such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to continue sending journalists to talk to both sides of the story.
The independence trusts Americans all over the political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news, we choose not to lock Americans from our reporting and analysis with payment walls. We believe that quality journalism should be accessible to everyone, paid by those who can afford it.

The bishop of Liverpool has resigned after he was accused of Sexual abuse And harassment.
A woman accused the Rt -reef Dr. John Perumbalath of having kissed her without consent and groping her, and another woman accused him of Sexual harassmentaccording to Channel 4 news.
Dr. Perumbalath said in a statement: “After applying for permission from His Majesty the King, I have today made the decision to retire from active ministry in the Church of England.
“Previously this week I was contacted by Channel 4 news Who informed me that they would send a story that contains allegations of inappropriate behavior of me against two different women.
“Since these accusations were made, I have consistently claimed that I have not done anything wrong and continue to do so.
“Since claims were made in 2023, they have been investigated and taken into account by experts from the National Safeguarding Team and had found them substantiated.
“The first accusation was also investigated by the police, which resulted in no further action. Nevertheless, media reports have treated me as guilty of all charges and dealt with these accusations as fact.
“Furthermore, it has been incorrectly reported that before my appointment as a bishop of Liverpool, I had failed to protect the assessment process. This is categorically not true.
“As Church of England has clarified in its written statements in the last 48 hours that responded to these false claims, the national protection group found no concern about my operational protection experience and recommended some development work for me when I took on further strategic protective responsibility – which Usually is the case for new diocesan bishops.
“This rush to them and my media trial (be the social or broadcast) has made my position unsustainable because of the impact it will have on the diocese in Liverpool and the wider church while we wait for further reviews and the next step.”
Dr. Perumbhath said his decision was “not a departure caused by errors or through any responsibility”.
His statement continued: “I do not want this story to become a distraction for this incredible pins and its people as it has been an honor and joy to serve. This is not a departure caused by errors or by any responsibility. Rather, it has become clear to go back from my ministry and waiting for further reviews to mean a long period of uncertainty for the diocese and everyone who earns it. “
He said he had made his decision for his own well -being, his family and the best of the diocese, but that the exact date when his role formally ends had not yet been decided and added: “There are minutes to observe that I will now take care of .
“But I go back from my ministry today. This means that I will not serve in or lead the pin with immediate effect. I have informed the Archbishop in York about my decision, and I understand that he will set up the necessary arrangements for bishop surveillance of the diocese for the rest of my time here and during the vacancy. “
Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, said: “I admit the decision by RT DRD Dr. John Perumbalath to resign from active ministry in Church of England. I respect his decision.
“My thoughts and prayers continue to be with everyone who has been affected by this situation.
“I am committed to ensuring stability during this transition period and will set the necessary arrangements to provide bishop surveillance for the diocese. A functioning bishop for the Liverpool diocese will be announced in the coming days. “
The diocese in Liverpool described his departure as “pension” and said: “After receiving the news of the retirement of the bishop in Liverpool, we acknowledge his decision to take this step in favor of the Diocese in Liverpool.
“This is a deeply painful situation and we all keep up in our prayers.”
