3 patients killed, dozens injured in fire on the hospital’s geriatric ward

Three people were killed and dozens more were injured after a fire that broke out at a German hospital geriatric ward.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 1, firefighters in Hamburg responded to a fire at Marienkrankenhaus, who can be translated into St. Mary’s Hospital or Marien Hospital, after it broke out in a room at the hospital, according to The Associated PressThe New York Times and one Translated statement from the fire brigade.

The victims were men aged 84, 85 and 87 per AP, who quote a police statement. In addition, a person was critically injured, 18 were seriously injured and 15 was slightly injured, according to the fire brigade’s statement.

A patient’s room on the hospital’s ground floor was already completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene, according to the statement, while several people in the rooms above could not leave and demanded help from their windows.

The fire brigade saved several people with ladders as rescue services that were administered first aid to some-with a few treated at the hospital’s internal emergency room.

About 220 emergency workers were sent to the scene, according to the fire brigade’s statement, and they stayed there until early in the morning.

Lorenz Hartmann, a spokesman for the Hamburg fire brigade, said that “flames had spread upstairs” at the time of rescue services arrived, according to the AP.

As AP also reported, firefighters extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. It was not immediately clear what started the fire.

Film from the stage, divided by AP, showed that the first answers are running towards the fire while led the way for firebirds. Upon their arrival, firefighters could be seen by holding ladders and helping older patients as they went down from upper floors during evacuation.

At one point, the first respondents administered a protective mask to one patient, per images, while nurses helped other patients outside.
