2 killed, 192 injured after the PSG Champions League victory goes down in chaos

Two people have died and at least 192 others are injured after the Champions League final in France.

On Saturday, May 31, violent clashes broke out while football fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain’s victory 5-0 against Inter Milan, Paris police chief Laurent Nuñe confirmed at a press conference, Per BBC.

Two people died during the incident, including a 23-year-old man who went on a scooter when he was struck by a car.

A second 17-year-old victim became deadly stabbed in the Parisian city of Dax “during the celebration”, the French news outlet The world reported. The Prosecutor’s Office said that the suspect is currently “on the run.”

The French Ministry of the Interior announced that of the 559 people arrested in the middle of the collisions, including 491 in Paris, was placed 320 in police repository, per Reutants and The world.

Photos from the Saturday Show crushed bus protection and riot police that shot tear gas and a water cannon when chaos pulled down near the Champs-Élysées Avenue and PSG’s Parc des Princes Stadium.

Police reported 692 fires including more than 200 burnt vehicles after the Champions League final, according to Sky News. During the press conference, Paris Police Chief Nuñe said that fireworks were also thrown at officers after the match.

“We really have to differentiate the fact that there were real PSG fans who enjoyed their night and individuals who were not here to look at the game and just to go on the cops,” Nuñe said, Per BBC.

Nine members of the police were injured together with the 192 civilians in the violence that broke out after the football celebration, Nuñe confirmed. He also said that several firefighters were attacked while responding to car fires.

In addition, four family members were injured after a car “career to fans who celebrated PSG’s victory in Grenoble in southeastern France,” The world reported. The driver surrendered to the police and was placed in arrest. He tested negatively for alcohol and drugs, according to the outlet.

“True PSG fans are being excited about their team’s magnificent performance. At the same time, barbarians have taken on Paris streets to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement,” French Interior Minister Bruno Retaililleau wrote on x.

“I have asked the internal security forces to react strongly to these atrocities. I offer my support to the prefect of the police and all police officers who ensure everyone’s security tonight,” he added. “It is unbearable that it is impossible to celebrate without fearing the will of a minority of tow that does not respect anything.”

Paris Saint-Germain will move on with a 90-minute victory parade at Champs-Élysées today, according to the BBC.
