Two more people in Louisiana have died after eating oysters related to the carnivorous bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus.
The two deaths give the total number of people who have died so far this year from the bacteria to 6, confirmed health ombuds Destroy. The outlet reports that 14 more people were infected, giving the number of people affected by the virulent bacteria to 34 – the highest rate of infection in a decade.

Vibrio of course lives in coastal waters, according to Center for disease control and prevention. They can cause an infection if a swimmer has an open wound, a new tattoo or piercing. But most people get sick of vibrio after eating raw or undercooked seafood – especially oysters – for as as CDC Explains, seafood food by filtering water, so “Vibrio can concentrate inside oysters. ”

Oysters that caused the latest deaths were harvested in Louisiana and served at restaurants in Florida and Louisiana. But per CDCYou can’t say that an oyster has Vibrio – or other harmful bacteria – just by looking at it.
It earns the nickname “carnivorous bacteria” for, as, as CDC Says, some vibrio infections lead to necrotizing fasciitis – “a serious infection where the meat around an open wound dies.”
But while the agency says that diarrhea and vomiting are generally the symptoms of Vibrio Infections, others may develop a serious infection that leads to abscissionand one in five will die.
