At least 19 people were injured, including a child, after a fireworks at a fair in Germany ended in disaster.

According to a report from Associated PressGerman authorities said that firefighters and other emergency staff were called to the Rheinkirnes fair in the western town of Düsseldorf on Friday 18 July, after fireworks went too close to the ground.

Photos showed that the fireworks were almost at ground level, and spectators could be seen lying on the ground at the fair – which took place along the Rhin River – when emergency personnel tended to them.

Fire officials told DPA that one of the fireworks detonated in too low altitude, but the reason why it is still unknown.

Düsseldorf Fire Talesman told the outlet that a launch container may have tipped over, which caused the fireworks to leave.

About 80 fire officials and medical personnel were called to the scene, DPA added, and Düsseldorf Fire officials said the police are investigating the cause of the incident.

Although the authorities said that a criminal investigation is ongoing, a police spokesman told DPA that the force is currently considering the incident as a tragic accident.

“Our thoughts are with the affected and their families,” the event’s spokesman Peter Dietlmaier told AP. “We wish everyone hit a rapid recovery from the consequences of the accident. We deeply regret the accident.”

The Rheinkirmes fair ended early for the day after the fireworks accident, and the organizers are still considering whether they will continue the fireworks at next year’s event, Dietlmaier added.

The fair, which began on July 11 this year, takes place for 10 days and has entertainment parkures, Drone and fireworks and other entertainment along Rhinen’s left bank. Rheinkirnes is traditionally held in the celebration of Düsseldorf’s patron saint, Apollinaris.

Rheinkirnes is organized by St. Sebastianus Rifle Club, which traces its history back to the year 1316, according to AP.
