One man has died and six others have been injured after a shooting at Elizabeth City State University’s campus in North Carolina during the early hours of Sunday, April 27, the department has confirmed.

In a statement, the University announced that the incident occurred at the Campus Center after Yard Fest, the last event of the historically Black University’s week -long Viking Fest celebration.

“Six individuals were injured during the incident. Four lasting gunshot injuries, including three ECSU students,” Release reading. “In addition, two other ECSU students were injured during the subsequent uprising.”

The university continued to say that none of the injuries were considered to be life -threatening and that the six people were taken to a nearby hospital.

“A 24-year-old man, who was not an ECSU student, was pronounced deceased,” the university revealed. “His identity is kept in anticipation of notification of his relatives.”

“The university is deeply saddened by this meaningless action,” the university wrote in a subsequent update. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all members of the Viking community affected by this tragedy.”

After the incident, Campus had a lockdown and issued a “protection in place for all students”, they noted.

This was later lifted on Sunday after the authorities decided it was safe on campus, per NBC News.

In addition to the ECSU Police, Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigated.

According to NBC, the school also said that they had increased the number of patrols on campus to monitor the location in the wake of the incident.

People have contacted Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) for further updates, but did not immediately return.

NBC News notes that Elizabeth City State University has 2,300 students and is about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia

CNN Reports that North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident together with local authorities. The agency asked the public to submit “all information, videos or pictures” related to shooting, according to the outlet.
