A new study has revealed information about abuse within families.

“We also found that 7.6 million children live in a household with a parent who either has a moderate or serious substance use disorder,” said McCabe, per NPR. “And 3.4 million lives with a parent with multiple substance use disorders.”
In addition, McCabe’s team found that more than 6 million children have a parent with drug use disorder along with a mental health problem.

Dr. Scott Hadland, who specialized in youth medicine and was not involved in the study, emphasized that alcohol plays a major role in drug -related deaths, per NPR.
“It actually kills more people in the United States than opioids every year, but it’s a slower death rate,” Hadland told the outlet. “It is a chronic disease process that affects, you know, someone lives, any risk of developing cancer.”
Researchers believe that the study is important because children whose parents have a sud are more likely to be at risk of using substances in the past, abuse and mental health problems.
